Some collaborations just make sense.
Cookbook author Elizabeth (better known as Lizzie) Hewson first discovered Farmer Jo years ago, lining up for steaming bowls in the backstreets of Surry Hills, warming her hands on the walk to work.
So when she shared her vision for the ultimate winter porridge, we knew we wanted to bring it to life. The result is Old Fashioned Custard Oats with Apple, Nutmeg & a Hint of Orange - a limited edition blend that celebrates simple ingredients, slow mornings and the comforting ritual of a warm bowl shared with family.
For Lizzie, collaborating on this blend feels like a dream come true.
With echoes of old-fashioned custard, these oats are creamy, rich and made for slow winter mornings. Aussie-grown oats bring a deep nuttiness, egg adds custardy richness, while apple, nutmeg, vanilla and a hint of orange lend a taste of nostalgia.
For Lizzie, porridge has always been more than breakfast. It stretches back to her first food memory of a bowl finished with cream and brown sugar on a country stovetop, through to quiet winter morning rituals before her kids rise. Inspired by her love of custard in all its forms, and her apple and marmalade crumble from Home Food, this is her perfect bowl of porridge.
How to Cook (Quick Method)
Cook these oats using a 1:2 ratio of oats to liquid.
We love using water as the base to let the toasted oats shine, then adding milk to your liking for extra creaminess. Whether you stir the milk through during the final few minutes of cooking or after taking the oats off the heat, there's no right or wrong way. Make it your own.
Lizzie’s Method
Serves 2-3
Place 1 cup of oats and 2 cups of water in a saucepan over medium heat. Bring to the boil, then immediately reduce the heat to low.
Simmer for 6-8 minutes, stirring frequently, until thickened and very creamy. Add extra salt flakes if you like. Stirring helps release the starch and makes the oats extra creamy.Â
From here, it's really about how loose you like your oats. Add ¼-½ cup of milk of your choice and stir for another 2 minutes, or until you're happy with the consistency. Remove from the heat, cover with a lid and let the porridge rest for 3-5 minutes.
Serve with your favourite toppings. Lizzie loves brown sugar, a dollop of marmalade and a drizzle of cream.
